Every year, thousands of people used to come to Rabbi Yitzchak Meir of Ger for advice. Day after day, his personal secretary, Reb Bunem, tried to keep things running smoothly. But one day, a worried man tried to see the Rebbe ahead of everyone else. When Reb Bunem tried to stop him, the man slapped him in the face!

Reb Bunem told Rabbi Yitzchak Meir what had happened, but did not identify the offender. Somehow, Rabbi Yitzchak Meir knew. When the man's turn finally came, the Rebbe said, "You hit my secretary! I cannot help you until you apologize!"

The man called for the Rebbe's secretary and begged his forgiveness. Reb Bunem felt sorry for the man and thought, "It would be easy to accept his apology. But I want to do more."

Then he had an idea. "Rebbe, I'll forgive him on one condition."

"What's that?" Rabbi Yitzchak Meir asked.

"My condition is that you help him in any way that you can!"

Needless to say, Rabbi Yitzchak Meir agreed. Outside the Rebbe's office, the man went up to Reb Bunem and said, "How can I ever thank you?"

Reb Bunem replied, "Become my good friend!" And that's exactly what the man did!
